Direct mail trends topic of Nov. 4 meeting

Trends and innovations in direct mail will be the topic when Allan McEachern speaks at the Friday, Nov. 4, joint meeting of the Greater Spokane PRSA Chapter and the Spokane Public Relations Council. The meeting begins at 7:30 a.m. in Cataldo Hall at Gonzaga University. Cost is $9 for members, $7 for students and $11 for non-members.

Guest speaker will be Allan McEachern, president of Mailstream USA Inc. McEachern will provide a look at direct mail marketing and how this industry has changed over the past 25 years. According to McEachern, "the excitement is back" in direct mail and PR professionals should not overlook this communication method when looking to gain exposure for their clients. Due to recent advances in print technology and data collection, direct mail is an excellent solution for reaching out to target audiences on issues and campaigns.

McEachern will examine recent treads in "personalized" mail and explain how we can combine images and text to drive response and awareness using the mail. In addition, the presentation will touch on how direct mail competes with the web in reaching out, as well as other critical success factors for managing a direct mail campaign, cost considerations, and recent success stories.

Mailstream USA Inc. is a direct mail consulting and services company. McEachern has been involved in direct mail for more than 25 years, beginning his career with Ambassador Programs, the largest direct marketer in Eastern Washington. At Ambassadors, he served as vice president of information technology, responsible for automating the direct mail process. He was the first person in Eastern Washington to develop the computer programming required to translate ZIP+4 postal codes into delivery point barcodes in support of the USPS Workshare program.

In 1989, at the urging of the Postal Service, McEachern started Mailstream USA, a technical consulting company that helped mailers transition to automated mail. After a 20-year career at Ambassadors, he left the organization in December 2002 to lead Mailstream on a full-time basis. Today, Mailstream provides a wide variety of direct mail marketing solutions.

From the President

By MAGGIE CRABTREE

Magnum PR will be a great chance for us to see each other, have some great food and wine and help the future of PR in Spokane. We have many great items to bid on this year. There's a weekend in Big Fork, Mont., Symphony tickets and Mariners tickets, to name a few of the great items coming forth to date.

More than just a night of fun, with this event we help PRSSA students. The PRSSA program gives us qualified employees who know what they are getting into when they join the workforce.Take Lauren, who came through EWU's program. She was my intern through a winter, but she really wanted to work for a sports team. The Mariners were at the hospital for an autograph party and she was introduced to the team. She was able to intern with the team, then moved to a small baseball team in New Jersey where she ran community outreach. She's been interviewed again by the Mariners and will probably be back in the Northwest before we know it.  Because of PRSSA we have Mariners tickets for Magnum PR. More importantly we have a great representative for PR. We can look around Spokane a see Tamitha doing a great job at Desautel Hege, Jaclyn at the City Credit Union, or Nicole at Second Harvest Food Bank. All are past PRSSA students who have taken their place next to us as professionals and colleagues.

Give generously with items to auction.  Buy tickets to the event. Invite your friends and clients and plan to have fun. We have reason to celebrate our successes in this great scholarship program. We can't stop yet. There are a batch of worthy students waiting for our help.  See you at the auction on Thursday, Dec. 1, at the Corbin Art Center.
