A Workshop You Don't Want to Miss!
|
Nationally known speaker, Rhoda Weiss, APR, will be the featured speaker at the 2007 PRSA Professional Workshop hosted by the Greater Spokane Chapter of PRSA on Friday, November 2, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Cataldo Room at Gonzaga University in Spokane. Dr. Erica Austin and Dr. Bruce Pinkleton
from Washington State University will be the featured speakers during
the second half of the workshop. Rhoda Weiss, APR, Fellow PRSA, will share the latest examples of the best in all areas of public relations, communications and marketing—from trends and best practices in new technology and social media to great ideas for communicating with employees, multicultural audiences, the media, the community and other key stakeholders. From what to expect in the future to multiple strategies and ideas that organizations of all sizes can implement immediately, Weiss will discuss practical, proven, progressive and profitable, low- to no-cost ideas from her career. Recipient of the 2007 UCLA Extension Distinguished Faculty Award and past national president of the American Hospital Association’s Society of Healthcare Strategy and Market Development, Weiss is president of Rhoda Weiss & Associates in Santa Monica, Calif; a Kellogg Foundation Fellow and recipient of dozens of communications awards and four lifetime achievement awards. She recently co-hosted a program with the U.S. Department of State for members of Congress and their staff at the U.S. Capitol, where she presented ideas on the future of public relations and its international role in public diplomacy. She has appeared this year in many media outlets, including CNN, the Wall Street Journal, Los Angeles Business Journal, Washington Times, Baltimore Sun and more, and is completing her PhD in Leadership and Change at Antioch University. She is the author of more than 300 journal articles and recently returned from an international conference in South Africa where she spoke on global communications as well as health communications. During the second half of the workshop, Dr. Erica Austin and Dr. Bruce Pinkleton will share innovative ways to evaluate PR programs and show how PR contributes to the bottom line. Austin and Pinkleton co-authored, “Strategic Public Relations Management: Planning and Managing Effective Communication Programs,” a book on using research in PR management and campaign design/evaluation, which helps readers move from a tactical public relations approach to a strategic management style based on skillful use of research and planning techniques. Combining the key components of effective management and campaign design, Austin and Pinkleton will discuss the tools needed for developing and presenting comprehensive, effective, and accountable plans. Austin is interim director and a professor in the Edward R. Murrow School of Communication at WSU. Pinkleton is a professor of communication and head of the Public Relations degree program in the Edward R. Murrow School of communication at WSU. He has consulted with a number of organizations including the Washington State Department of Social and Health Services, Associated Press and GTE. Cost of the workshop is $25 for Spokane PRSA members, $40 for
non-members, and $15 for students. Ticket prices will go up $10 at the

Dear fellow PRSA Members, It is an exciting time for PRSA and for our local Greater Spokane Chapter. I hope each of you has made plans to attend this year’s fall workshop, immediately following the November breakfast meeting. For this year’s workshop, our chapter was able to have Rhoda Weiss, national Chair and CEO of PRSA, visit Spokane. If you have never heard Rhoda speak, you are in for an amazing experience. At the workshop she will share practical, proven, progressive and profitable, low- to no-cost ideas from her career which includes traveling more than 6 million miles speaking and consulting with over 700 organizations in 49 states and abroad in the areas of strategy, public relations, communications and marketing. This is a great opportunity to hear from a national expert and learn valuable tips from her personal experience. We also have an extraordinary second portion of the workshop focused on budget-friendly research options and how to make them work for you. It is shaping up to be an extraordinary event for our chapter and our region! On the national level, several topics will be discussed at the PRSA National Assembly in Philadelphia on October 20th. Maggie Crabtree will be representing our board and our chapter at the Assembly and will again serve us proud. Look for an update on the results of the Assembly in our next newsletter. It is indeed an exciting time for PRSA and for our region, a time that I look forward to seeing continue locally, regionally and nationally. Best wishes, Tamitha

Mentoring the Next Generation of Professionals
|
Many of us in the communication business can identify an individual that helped us get started. We might still have a trusted individual that provides us guidance. We can repay that kindness by mentoring area communication students who are entering, or considering entering, the communication field. PRSA board members have agreed to help match area students, who would like a mentor, with local professionals. If you are interested in mentoring a student and would like to be added to a list of potential mentors, please let any board member know of your interest.
