Professional Development Workshop: Challenges of a Changing News Media
Friday, Oct. 3, 2008
Breakfast Meeting | 7:30-9 a.m.
Workshop | 9 a.m.-12 p.m.
Spokane PRSA is proud to bring you this special professional
development opportunity on Friday, Oct. 3, from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. at the
Spokane Athletic Club (Cutter Room) featuring Stephan Kaufman, a freelance correspondent for CBS Radio News.
As this year’s featured 2008 PRSA Professional Workshop speaker,
Kaufman provides a seasoned journalist’s view on the state of the media
today and into the future. Stephan will lead an interactive discussion
focusing on his background and experience in radio while offering
insight on what we as public relations professionals can do to work
more effectively with the next generation of journalists.
Following Kaufman’s presentation, join a panel discussion featuring Steve Smith (The Spokesman-Review); Stephan Kaufman, CBS Radio; Greg Birchell, BHW1; and Patricia McRae,
president of KHQ Inc. and general manager of KHQ TV. Smith, Kaufman and
McRae will provide insight on the challenges of a changing news media
in a global environment from both a print and electronic perspective,
and Birchell will address how this changing news media affects both
advertising and PR professionals when evaluating their return on
investment for print versus electronic media. The panel will be moderated by Steve Becker.
After the panel, you will have the opportunity to participate in
roundtable discussions with each of our featured panelists. Don’t miss
this rare opportunity to engage with these four media leaders!
Stephan Kaufman, CBS Radio News, Freelance Correspondent
He files 30 stories per month broadcasted to more than 500 news
affiliates with a total weekly audience of more than 20 million people.
Stephan Kaufman, of CBS Radio News and resident of Chattaroy, is one of
today’s busiest CBS freelance correspondents.
Kaufman's career spans over 40 years and includes stints at stations
in Cleveland; Austin, Texas; St. Louis; Denver; and Phoenix. Along the
way, he's rubbed shoulders with celebrities, musicians and entertainers
including Rosemary Clooney and Jerry Lee Lewis. More recently, he's
reported on cleanup efforts after Hurricane Katrina and Thailand's
tsunami, as well as school shootings, wildfires, the Big Thompson
Canyon flood, tornados, a Rocky Mountain Airways crash and former
President Ronald Reagan's funeral.
Steve Smith, The Spokesman-Review, Editor
Since 2002, Steve Smith has served as editor of The Spokesman-Review,
a privately held newspaper in Spokane, Wash., with a daily circulation
of 107,000 and a Sunday circulation of 133,000. As editor, Smith
supervises all news and editorial operations and a staff of 130 that
produces three daily editions.
Prior to joining The Spokesman-Review, Smith was editor for two years of the Statesman Journal, a Gannett newspaper in Salem, Ore. He also served as editor and vice president of The Gazette, a Freedom Communications Inc. newspaper in Colorado Springs, Colo. Before joining The Gazette,
Smith served two years as assistant to the vice presidents/news for
Knight-Ridder Inc. in Miami. He worked with Knight-Ridder’s 30
newspapers, developing training programs, producing critiques and
assisting with strategic planning. Previously, he was managing editor
at The Wichita Eagle and held a variety of positions at the St. Paul Pioneer Press. He also worked at the Star-Tribune in Minneapolis and the Register-Guard in Eugene, Ore.
Smith was chairman of the American Society of Newspaper Editors
“Change” committee in 1997-98 and was a member of ASNE’s Credibility
Think Tank. He is active in the Society of Professional Journalists.
Smith also has been a frequent lecturer on civic journalism and

Institute for Media Studies and the American Press Institute, and has
lectured on newsroom training issues for the Freedom Forum. He serves
on the advisory board for the Pew Center on the States and is a member
of the University of Oregon Journalism Advancement Council.
A Portland, Ore. native, Smith is a graduate of the Northwestern
University Newspaper Management Center Advanced Executive Program. He

University, where he was a Kiplinger fellow, and a bachelor’s degree in
journalism from the University of Oregon.
Greg Birchell, BHW1, Partner
With his nearly 20 years experience creating some of the most highly
regarded advertising around, Greg Birchell brings a lot to the table.
Though his roots stem from the creative department, his talents also
regularly solve unique business challenges and provide the kind of
market acumen for which clients clamor. When Greg’s not quietly guiding
clients to greatness, he can be found on keyboards and lead vocals in
his weekend rock band.
Patricia McRae, KHQ, president and general manager
Patricia joined KHQ in 1993 as News Director, being named President in
2008. She has worked in the broadcast industry for 26 years, with most
