A Message From The President
|
Happy 2009!
In today’s crazy economy, we are
all looking at ways to stretch our budgets. This can entail looking closely and
what memberships are serving us well and which ones we might be able to do
without. However, it’s important, especially during hard
times, to realize there is strength through community. Your membership in PRSA
connects you with
public relations professionals across America, ideas from every corner of
the discipline, and provides
a steady flow of relevant information. Investing
in yourself is the best way to meet the challenges of today head-on.
With PRSA you can:
- Extend your network while increasing your knowledge.
- Stay on top of emerging trends and industry news.
- Find answers to your most pressing public relations questions.
- Accelerate your career.
- Keep learning.
- Benefit from additional Members-Only
offers including a great offer for those of you who may have let your
membership lapse last year. (If you rejoin in February and March 2009, you
will receive a free one-year membership with your dues payment! Visit
prsa.org for more details.)
- Get your APR certification! (See Maggie Crabtree’s article in this
issue for more information.)
As a PRSA member, you will meet other
professionals in the field, engage with experts, share solutions, learn new
strategies and shape your career—all in one place. Connect with PRSA's
active community of more than 22,000 public relations professionals and
participate in networking (face-to-face and virtual) and career building
at local and national levels. We want to ensure that PRSA membership
continues to be your smartest career investment – at both the national AND
chapter level.
I am honored and excited to
serve as your chapter president for 2009. Please let me know of any suggestions
you may have to make our chapter even stronger. And, if you’re interested in
volunteering as a board member or officer, please feel free to contact me at mmgaley@msn.com. Remember, PRSA is a community you can count on at any

APR Classes Free for PRSA Members
|
Have you ever wondered what it takes to become an APR? APR means
"Accredited in Public Relations" and is a signal to your employer and
others that you know what you are talking about. This test is offered
through the Public Relations Society of America. Locally we offer the
preparation classes taught by local APR's. Our first class started on
Thursday, January 29 at Desautel Hege Communications. You can take
these local courses as a good review of the best practices in PR theory
and action.
The program originated in 1964 and was administered by PRSA until 1998,
when the Universal Accreditation Board was formed to administer the
Examination for Accreditation in Public Relations. The public relations
organizations that are members of the Universal Accreditation Board
include the Agricultural Relations Council, Florida Public Relations
Association, Maine Public Relations Council, National School Public
Relations Association, Public Relations Society of America (PRSA),
Religion Communicators Council, Southern Public Relations Federation,
Texas Public Relations Association and Asociación de Relacionistas
Profesionales de Puerto Rico (Puerto Rico Public Relations Association).
The APR study course which is taught by local APR professionals from
our area in the Spokane PRSA reviews all aspects of the public
relations profession including the history of the profession, research,
crisis planning, strategic management, communication theory, PR law and
current technology. You can use the 10 week course to prepare to take
the APR exam or as a review of the PR profession.
There is no cost for the course for PRSA Greater Spokane members.
Non-members pay just $25 a class, and you can attend whichever you
want. For more information on how to continue to the national test go
to www.PRSA.org. If you have any questions please contact Maggie Crabtree, APR, at maggie@crabbytrees.com for more information.

Spokane PRSA is proud to announce that it will offer an interactive, hands-on training session covering all of these topics and more. You'll have the opportunity to work in front of a computer while learning from local area experts. Stay tuned for more information about this workshop, scheduled for May 2009!
